Why Your Breaker Keeps Tripping

A breaker trips because something on that circuit exceeded what it is allowed to do. There are four broad causes, and fitting a larger breaker removes the protection while leaving every one of them in place.
Start here: the breaker is doing its job
A breaker that trips has interrupted a circuit because something about that circuit exceeded what it is allowed to do. Replacing it with a larger one does not fix anything — it removes the protection while leaving the cause in place, on wiring sized for the original rating.
There are four broad reasons, and they are not equally urgent.
Overload
Too much connected load on one circuit. Typically trips after a few minutes rather than instantly, and correlates with what you switched on. The classic version is a kitchen or garage circuit that copes until a second heating appliance joins it.
If the pattern is obvious and repeatable, this is the least alarming of the four — but it is still a signal that the circuit was laid out for a different set of appliances than the ones you own.
Short circuit
A fault between conductors. Usually trips immediately and every time, often with a bang or a visible mark. This is not something to keep resetting: leave the circuit off.
Ground fault
Current leaving the circuit by a path it should not take. Protective devices in wet areas are designed to catch exactly this, which is why kitchens, bathrooms, garages and outdoor receptacles are the usual places to meet it. Sometimes the cause is a genuinely faulty appliance, sometimes moisture in an outdoor box after rain, sometimes a real wiring fault.
A failing breaker
Breakers are mechanical devices and they age. A breaker that trips at well below its rating, or one that feels loose or warm, may itself be the fault. This is a diagnosis rather than an assumption — the other three causes have to be ruled out first, and doing that properly means measuring, not guessing.
The Austin-specific complication
A large share of this metro's housing dates from the window in which aluminium branch wiring was used — cables installed from 1965 into the mid-1970s. That matters here because of one finding: the federal regulator reports that failing aluminium connections seldom provide easily detected warning signs, and have been known to fail and overheat with no prior indication.
In a house of that era, then, the reasonable reading of an intermittent trip is not “it is probably nothing”. It is a reason to have someone open the connections and look. The absence of drama is not reassurance.
What not to do
Do not fit a bigger breaker. Do not keep resetting a breaker that trips immediately. Do not run the circuit through an extension lead from somewhere else, which relocates the load without reducing it. And if resetting is accompanied by heat, noise or smell, stop and leave the circuit off.
This page deliberately contains no repair procedure. Diagnosis on a live system is not a reading exercise, and the failure modes above are precisely the ones that injure people who treat it as one.
