Why this matters here

Two things separate these jobs from each other, and neither is difficulty.

What the work touches. Austin lets an unlicensed homeowner do electrical trade work in their own principal residence under a homestead permit — but not on the main electric service. So a new circuit for a hot tub can be homeowner work while a much smaller surge device at the service equipment cannot. The line is drawn around what the work touches, not around how hard it is.

Whether the utility is involved. Anything that changes your service brings in the utility as well as the city, in that order: in Austin Energy territory the service application is filed and stamped before the permit is submitted, and the utility energises last. That sequence is where most “why is this taking so long” actually lives.

One timing note that applies to every page in this section: the city is on the 2023 National Electrical Code with local amendments, and the 2026 edition takes effect on 1 September 2026. If your work is inspected either side of that date, the edition in force then is the one your inspector applies.

Every service page here carries the date it was written. Most of what is published about electrical work in this metro does not, which means there is no way to tell which set of rules it was describing.
